Detention under parliamentary scrutiny: public meeting, London

A Detention Action and Right to Remain event

Date: Tuesday 7th October 2014

Location: Praxis Community Projects, Pott Street, London, E2 0EF

Time: 6.00pm – 8.00pm

Join us for this special public event to launch the London community submission to the Parliamentary detention inquiry of the All-Party Parliamentary Groups on Refugees and Migration.

People in London with experience of detention have shared their stories to produce a submission to the inquiry on the impact of detention.  The submission was produced at a group evidence-gathering session, co-hosted by  Detention Action, Right to Remain, Jesuit Refugee Service and the Forum. Representatives of the London group will present extracts of their submission and the recommendations that they are making to the inquiry’s cross-party panel.

They will be joined by speakers, including John McDonnell, MP for Harmondsworth and Colnbrook, Lisa Matthews from Right to Remain and Jerome Phelps from Detention Action, to discuss ‘Detention Under Parliamentary Scrutiny’.

Momentum for reforming the UK’s detention estate has been mounting throughout 2014, fed by media coverage of protests and hunger strikers inside detention, sexual assault allegations in Yarl’s Wood, and a series of tragic deaths. Now, thanks to the cross-party inquiry into detention it is also firmly on the Parliamentary agenda.  Will the inquiry lead to change?  What are the most urgent steps that can be taken?

The event will also launch Detention Action’s new report, The State of Detention 2014.  The report reviews the key detention issues in need of urgent reform, featuring articles by experts with direct experience of detention.
